State Publishers Clearing House Winner dies BESSEMER (AP) A Bessemer man won the $1 million Publishers Clearing House in April, but the prize could not restore his failing health.
The winner, Leroy Scarbrough, died just went to sleep and never woke up," said Ann Munson, Scarbrough's daughter. "I believe his heart just gave out on him." The 69-year-old father of six was in a hospital recovering from a stroke wheh he won the sweepstakes in April. Family members said the money fueled his will to hang on for as long as he did and lifted his spirits. "If he hadn't won that money, he would have died sooner," Ms. Munson said.
"I think it actually prolonged his life because it helped him with his depression." Scarbrough decided before his death that much of the money would go to help his children. "That's what really makes me happy about it," he had said. "Being able to do something for my children." Hermit's death creates $1 million problem BIRMINGHAM (AP) A suburban Birmingham man, who lived in a tent, slept on a piece of foam rubber, and stored ceiling-high stacks of newspapers inside a dilapidated family home, died leaving a $1 million estate. Attorneys have begun sorting through the belongings of Dargan Suther, a 73-year-old bachelor who became known as "The Midfield Jefferson County Circuit Judge Ralph Cook is overseeing the inventory of Suther's belongings, the liquidation of his holdings and the search for relatives who might be entitled to part of the Suther estate. Suther, who died in September, apparently left no will.
Mayor wants AIDS clinic moved out OXFORD (AP) A man carrying the HIV virus said his efforts to open an AIDS clinic in Oxford have been met with hostility, threats and fears that hom*osexuals will kidnap children. Bob Axelton plans to begin providing free medical services to AIDS victims on Dec. 3. His clinic will be the fourth in the nation designed to serve a rural population, according to the National AIDS Information Clearinghouse in Rockville, Md. At a public meeting Thursday attended by about 50 people, Axelton and Dr.
Barbara Hanna tried to talk about the disease and the clinic. Mayor Leon Smith said he had "seen no proof" anyone in his east Alabama town of 9,000 has AIDS and wishes Axelton would take his clinic elsewhere. Dog track owner pursues boat gambling MOBILE (AP) One of the owners of Mobile Greyhound Park is trying to bring riverboat gambling casinos to Mississippi, although he concedes it may effect his dog track business. Frank Brown, one of seven partners in the Mobile track, is an investor in Mississippi Entertainment Group, a firm hoping to develop dockside gambling casinos at four locations in Mississippi. Brown is the son-in-law of Mobile contractor Ellis McDonald, who is serving a 20-year federal prison sentence for racketeering, extortion, fraud and income tax evasion.

In contrast Mobile was in the mid-60s and elsewhere temperatures were generally in the 50s north and 60s Obituaries Sadie Burwell Mrs. Sadie Burwell of Selma, died Wednesday, Nov. 7. She was a native of Pittsburgh, was reared in Birmingham, and had lived in Selma for 55 years.
Services will be held at Temple Gate Seventh Day Adventist Church at 1 p.m. Sunday. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Julia Darden of Kansas City, and Mrs.
Lillian Jackson of Pasadena, and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Burwell received her bachelor's degree in Elementary from Alabama Teachers College and her master's in Early Childhood Education from the Teachers College of Columbia University lat the New York City. She taught school for 33 years --one year in Perry. County cand 32 year's in the Dallas County School System at Mt.
Zion, Selfield, Beach Island and Brantley High. She served as president and public relations chairman for the Selma Dallas County Retired Teachers Association and was a member until her death. Mrs. Burwell was very active in Education Selma City Council President Carl Morgan, seated, signs a proclamation urging Selmians to honor the observation of American Education Week Nov. 11-17 "with appropriate activities and to renew their commitment to the education of every child." Witnessing the proclamation are, and in volunteer work on a community-wide basis.
She also served as church pianist and as Primary Sabbath School Teacher, administered to the sick and shut-ins with words of consolation, prayer, and other takens of love in homes, conducted "better health" classes, practiced journalism through writing religious tracts. She also wrote on "health" for the "Sun Post" under the title of "Golden Gleanings" and did miscellaneous writing for the Black Belt Journal and Selma Times-Journal, twice winning Selma Times- Journal writing contests. Her activities also included serving as a youth counselor not only at home but in summer youth camps and camporees in Tennessee and Georgia and attendance at a youth congress abroad in Vienna. She received many awards and honors including being honored as "Woman of the Year" by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She was married to the late Charles William Burwell, formerly of Perry County.
John M. Kenington John Marshall Kenington, 69, of Selma died Friday in a local hospital. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Pine Flat Cemetery in Perry County with the Rev. Gene Smith officiating and the Lawrence Funeral Home directing.
