Tesla’s Holiday Update Will Add These Features to the Tesla App (2024)

Ho Ho Ho, hold everything. If you want to spoil your Christmas surprise from Tesla, keep reading. I know you are still reading, so you are on the naughty list! Here we go; the 2022 Holiday Update is a doozy so let's tear off the wrapping paper and reveal some of the new features that will be coming to the Tesla app.

Light Show Control

No longer will you have to get in the vehicle and scroll through the screen to find the Light Show. Now Tesla owners can activate the fan favorite from the app. A New Years' song is also rumored to be included, in addition to Carol of Bells. Activating the light show from the app will be far more convenient and fun for someone who uses the Light Show as part of their exterior Christmas decorations. Yes, my neighbors and I may be a little tired of Carol of Bells.

Tesla Emission Increase

That's right, Tesla is increasing emissions! Just like the Light Show, you will now be able to activate emissions, also known as farting, from your app. The whoopie cushion can be activated while outside of the car. For the pranksters in the crowd, this should bring your game up a level.

According to an article posted on Naver, you'll be able to activate Emissions Mode by adding it to your Quick Controls near the top of the app. You'll then be able to pick your fart sound and have the car play it.

It appears that the sounds will come out of the pedestrian warning system (PWS) speaker, so it may be limited to vehicles that have the external speaker installed.

Dog Mode Supervision

Tesla recently improved Dog Mode to work with Sentry Mode. Previously users had to pick one or the other. Now, the company is enabling fur baby parents to view the interior camera to keep an eye on the four-legged buddies.

Recent release notes hinted at cabin camera viewing; now we know why. This is a big one if you have a more naughty than nice dog or puppy-in-training who has used the Tesla as a chew toy.

It's like the vehicle version of Furbo but without the treat dispenser. Of course, that could be in the new hardware update, but that is unlikely! For those wondering about privacy, this camera will not record, and it's believed there will be some kind of notification on the screen if the camera is being viewed remotely.

The interior camera will only be viewable while Dog Mode is active. This feature will not add the cabin camera view as an additional camera to Sentry Mode.

MyQ App Support?

Elon Musk will now open your garage door for you! Well, not personally, but MyQ will be included in Tesla's car Holiday Update. This system uses WiFi to open, close and monitor users' garage doors. We hope that Tesla will offer more than just garage door support and include support for lights and gates as well.

While it's not a feature we've seen confirmed, we think it a lot of sense for Tesla to integrate MyQ support into their app as well, similarly to how HomeLink is integrated. We'll have to wait and see if that's the case.

The first incident involving a Tesla Semi occurred in the Greater Sacramento area in northern California yesterday. The highway in Placer County was closed by the responding California Highway Patrol unit.

Semi Fire

The exact causes and details of the fire and incident remain unclear at this time, but it seems that the Semi caught fire around 3 AM immediately following the crash. The highway was closed in both directions due to the fire and remained closed until late afternoon for the westbound lanes, while eastbound was closed until about 7:30 PM. The incident began as a crash, and no injuries were reported.

Batteries

Electric vehicle fires are rare, in fact, they’re much rarer than traditional vehicle fires, but there are a few key facts to keep in mind. EV fires tend to be devastating for several reasons – the materials in the battery can be toxic when exposed to the air – especially through the smoke and fumes of a fire. In addition, due to the massive amounts of energy that EV batteries can store, EV fires can blaze for a long period of time. We recently dug into EV battery electrolytes and the chemistry in batteries.

This Tesla Semi fire is particularly devasting, partly due to the Semi having a ~900kWh battery – nearly 9-10 times that of a Model Y. In a recent incident report involving a Model Y fire, it took about 10,000 gallons of water and 4 hours to extinguish the fire. This one began burning at 3 AM and it wasn’t until more than 12 hours later that the battery temperature was under control.

On the flip side, EV fires tend to happen far less often than ICE fires – with an EV fire being 8x less likely than an ICE fire, according to Tesla’s Impact Report. When they do happen though, first responders need to be well trained with how to deal with EV fires.

Firefighter Response

First responders on the scene have had to don HAZMAT suits in order to respond to the fire, and the fumes from the fire are the primary reason that the local roadway has been closed. In general, the immediate response for EV fires is to cool the battery pack, generally using water. Other options include submerging the pack in water to immediately cool it, or to bury the pack with sand, or just letting it burn itself out.

For now, first responders appear to be hosing down the Semi with just water, and nothing else is on the books just yet. The Semi is on fire pretty close to a major treeline, but luckily California hasn’t had a spate of dry weather recently, so the risk of this evolving into a major wildfire remains pretty low, according to officials.

When Tesla ships a vehicle out from its factory, it’s usually on a fairly recent update – but with a three-digit last set of numbers. These factory firmwares look something like this in general: 2024.26.100, or 2024.26.200.

If you see a vehicle with a 3-digit firmware update – that means it’s fresh from the factory. It’s generally not anything unique, and nothing to be concerned – or excited – about. However, there have been a couple of instances where Tesla has included a new feature in factory firmware, such as the time they started measuring distances without ultrasonic sensors.

Why Does Tesla Do This?

Sometimes, factory firmware is the most stable version of a specific software build – and one that is generally up to date or one major update behind. This is done for a couple of reasons; one is new Tesla owners receive a stable software version without major issues.

Next, sometimes Tesla does incremental hardware updates to its vehicles on the production lines. These incremental hardware updates also require software support – generally reflected in these factory firmware. After all, Tesla won’t put support for an incremental hardware update in an older firmware version.

When Do You Receive an Update?

Factory firmware generally lags behind a few weeks to other Tesla software updates. In general, when a vehicle is on factory firmware, it’ll be about a month before it receives its first true software update.

So don’t worry! If you’ve got a vehicle on factory firmware, you’ll likely receive a software update a little later than everyone else. But once you do get your first one, you’ll be on the main software track and ready to receive consistent software updates through the normal process.
