President’s Flyline: March 2009

Accessing fishable waters

ACCESSING FISHABLE WATERS
March 2 Stan Knipe, our Trip Chairman, and a New York State Guide, will talk to us about day trips, accessing fishable waters, and parking.  Stan has created contact info for obtaining parking and access permits.  This has been posted in the Members section of the Salty web site.

Tying: To encourage more tiers to attend, Jose Colon is conducting his tying classes the hour before the start of the general meetings – you’re there anyway, why not tie?  If you haven’t done it before, or want a refresher course, come early on March 2 – check with  Jose for openings saltflyguy@yahoo.com .

Destination Fishing Trips: What a great kick-off to the 2009-year of the Salty’s.  January – David Blinken captivated his audience with his presentation of various Destination Fishing Trips: Bahamas, Maine, Martha’s Vineyard, and Long Island.  We intend to put together, for starters, some modest overnight and weekend trips – at reasonable prices, to get the club fishing together and sharing stories in the evenings over dinner.  If anyone has any thoughts on where they would like to fish, costs, etc, please pass info on to: flyline@hotmail.com

April 6: Fly Fishing 101 New to the sport, or really do not know it all, do not miss Rino Bratelli’s all inclusive presentation of salt water fly fishing basics, and then some.

Rino lays it out for you.

We had a very good turn out at the Fly Fishing Show in Somerset NJ.  Members attended many seminars, helped at the Salty booth, and spent money.  Many new members signed up; and a number of renewals.  We also had many people express interest in attending the 42nd Conclave.  Do not miss next year.

At the February Meeting – Tom Matassa and Mike Johnson attempted to get us into shape for the start of the new season (or at least showed us what to do).  Stretch out and protect those important casting muscles.

42nd Conclave:  June 12, 13, 14, 2009.  Plan ahead: Our base for fishing fun and info is The Soundview Inn, Greenport NY.   Ed Mitchell will be our keynote guest.  Ed is the complete package; not only is he entertaining, he is a great presenter, author, fly tier, and caster.  Check Ed’s site at http://www.flyroddingthecoast.com/

To enhance your club experience and enjoyment, the Board urges each member to participate on a Committee.  Please contact Bob Skoy flyline@hotmail.com or Jose Colon saltflyguy@yahoo.com  to discuss one (or more) committee(s) and get involved.

On behalf of the Board and Officers, I wish you all
Happy St Patty’s Day – The Start of the Fishing Season
